Foreign Policy: Rep. Emilia Sykes Presses Trump Energy Secretary Over Remarks About U.S. ‘Taking’ Iranian Oil

A tense exchange between U.S. Representative Emilia Sykes and Energy Secretary Chris Wright has drawn attention to President Donald Trump’s remarks about the United States “taking” millions of barrels of oil from Iran amid the ongoing U.S.–Iran war.

During a House Committee on Science, Space and Technology hearing, Sykes questioned Wright about whether he was aware of President Trump’s remarks concerning the movement of millions of barrels of oil out of the region.

Wright initially said that the United States was working to prevent the flow of Iranian oil and stop oil sales from generating revenue for Iran. Sykes, however, pressed him to answer the specific question of whether he knew about the oil Trump had said the United States was “taking.”

After Sykes played an audio clip of Trump discussing the issue, Wright acknowledged that he was unaware of the specific operation Trump had referred to.

Sykes then questioned whether the President was being truthful about the oil. Wright rejected the suggestion that Trump was lying, saying the President was speaking “casually” about U.S. efforts to stop the flow of Iranian oil.

The exchange became more contentious when Sykes challenged the idea of speaking casually about military operations and war. She argued that the conflict had already resulted in serious consequences, including the deaths and injuries of American service members.

The dispute has also raised questions over the language used to describe the oil operation. While President Trump referred to the United States “taking” millions of barrels of oil, the wording has prompted debate over whether the oil was being seized, diverted, or prevented from reaching the market.

The Trump administration has framed its actions as part of efforts to prevent Iranian oil revenues from financing activities the United States opposes, including Iran’s nuclear programme. Critics, however, have questioned the legal and political implications of U.S. military involvement in controlling the movement of oil during an armed conflict.

The exchange between Sykes and Wright has therefore become part of a broader debate over transparency, presidential rhetoric and the conduct of the U.S. war with Iran.

The question now being asked is whether “taking” is an adequate description of the operation — or whether the circumstances and legal authority behind the movement of the oil require a more precise explanation.
