The disturbing arrest of Verydarkblackman (VDM) is deeply troubling in a country governed by a democratically elected president and one that claims to uphold democratic values. VDM is widely known for using his platform to speak out against the injustices perpetrated by law enforcement and the wealthy elite against the voiceless and impoverished. He consistently lends his voice in support of the oppressed, regardless of whether the perpetrators are rich or powerful.
The arrest of VDM by the EFCC can only be described as a kidnapping. According to reports from his brother, he was taken by EFCC officers while leaving GTB bank, with his head forcibly covered before being taken away. This was not a formal arrest; it was, in layman's terms, a kidnapping.
While I may not always agree with some of VDM’s methods or views on handling certain vital issues, he remains a necessary voice for the people — especially the voiceless and the oppressed. We must stand firm in upholding the principles of justice and due process. The law must be applied equally to all citizens, both rich and poor. Yet we continue to witness those who have caused immense harm to our nation, those who have looted public funds and driven millions into poverty, being celebrated, honoured, and even having roads and institutions named after them. Meanwhile, a vocal critic is forcefully taken off the streets like a common criminal.
If VDM is suspected of any wrongdoing or financial crime that falls under the EFCC's mandate, why was he not invited for questioning or issued a formal court summons? Had he refused, he could have been declared wanted on their official page, as is routinely done. In that case, an arrest would have been legally justifiable. Instead, law enforcement chose intimidation over protocol, flouting the very laws they are sworn to uphold. Many law enforcement agencies have now become tools in the hands of the rich, religious leaders, oppressors, looters, politicians, and the ruling class — particularly those who have plundered and are still ruining the country. Rather than upholding the law and the constitution, these agencies are increasingly being used to victimise and silence those who dare to speak out, creating fear in the minds of citizens.
This heavy-handed tactic is unacceptable. It is a blatant attempt to silence dissent and intimidate anyone who dares to speak out against injustice. We demand answers. We demand accountability. And most importantly, we demand the immediate release of Verydarkblackman.
