Just days after his stunning knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, British-Nigerian boxing superstar Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday. The crash tragically claimed the lives of two of his close associates, while Joshua was hospitalised and later flown abroad for further treatment.
Joshua, 36, was travelling in a Lexus SUV near Makun, Ogun State, when the vehicle reportedly collided with a stationary truck. Early investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps indicate speeding and wrongful overtaking were contributing factors.
Two members of his team, Latif “Latz” Ayodele and Sina Ghami, died at the scene, shocking fans and the boxing community worldwide. Joshua survived with minor injuries.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu personally visited Joshua in hospital, offering condolences and support. The President also expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and prayed for Joshua’s swift recovery.
Messages of support have poured in from fans, athletes, and boxing legends across the globe, praising Joshua’s resilience and mourning the loss of his friends.
The accident has reignited concerns about road safety in Nigeria, particularly on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s busiest and most dangerous routes. Joshua, whose parents are Nigerian, was in the country during the holiday season, adding to the shock of the tragedy.
