Switzerland is set to hold a nationwide referendum on 14 June to decide whether to limit its population to 10 million by 2050. The move comes after the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) collected enough signatures to trigger a public vote.
The country’s population reached 9.1 million in late 2025, with about 30% of residents born abroad, many from European Union countries. The SVP argues that controlling population growth is necessary to protect housing, infrastructure, and the environment.
Critics, however, warn that capping the population could harm the economy and reduce the workforce, particularly in sectors that rely heavily on foreign-born workers, such as healthcare, technology, and services.
The upcoming vote puts Switzerland at a crossroads, as citizens weigh the impact of population limits on the nation’s demographics, economy, and society.
