President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday called on Nigerians to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to address the country’s security challenges.
Speaking at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade in Abuja, Tinubu — represented by Vice-President Kashim Shettima — emphasised that national security cannot be achieved by law enforcement alone.
“The safety of a nation cannot be outsourced to uniforms alone,” he said, urging citizens, community leaders, traditional and religious institutions, civil society, and the private sector to support policing efforts.
The president warned that a lack of trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies could worsen insecurity.
“When citizens and law enforcement stand on opposite sides of suspicion, insecurity thrives,” he said, stressing the need for a people-centred and accountable police force.
He further urged Nigerians to view the police as partners in maintaining peace and public safety.
Tinubu also charged the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to sustain ongoing reforms and uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline within the force.
“The road ahead may be long, but this nation is not stranded… Nigeria shall continue to prevail,” he added, expressing confidence in the country’s ability to overcome its security challenges.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, pledged strict accountability within the force, stating that misconduct would not be tolerated.
“Rank will not shield wrongdoing. Uniform will never excuse abuse. There will be no sacred cows,” he said.
Disu also assured officers of improved welfare, training, and operational support to enhance professionalism and effectiveness.
National Police Day, observed annually on April 7, honours the service, sacrifice, and dedication of police officers, including those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
